The Acting Mindfully Lab

Less acting. More being.

The Acting Mindfully Lab is a 3 pillar course taught by actor, acting educator and certified mindfulness instructor, Joanne Wilson.

Pillar One:    Mindfulness. Learn a variety of Mindfulness practices to help improve focus, concentration, memory, cope with stress and anxiety, be kinder to yourself and others,  be more empathetic of the characters you are playing, and more present in a scene.

At times, scenes and roles can shake us up. Through mindfulness, actors can adopt ways to self-regulate their nervous system and return to a sense of safety.

Pillar Two : The Craft. Here we explore script analysis, character motivation and desires, emotional truth and more.  Here we work with other actors through various acting exercises, scene work, monologues and audition pieces. We explore and go deeper in the training and craft of acting, turning back to mindfulness practices to help keep us grounded and in the moment.

Pillar Three: Powerful Questions.  We finish up our class time with journaling in two areas – the scene and character work. It’s a chance to reflect and understand and perhaps come to some personal insights.

Finally we wrap up the day with discussion, laughter and joy, ready to continue our exploration from week to week.  Acting Mindfully’s three pillars are there to guide and support actors by offering an empowering, creative and safe place to practice and grow.

I am grateful to live and work on the  traditional, unceded territory of the Lekwungen-speaking peoples, now represented by the Songhees and Esquimalt (Xʷsepsəm) Nations,

and the W̱SÁNEĆ peoples (Tsartlip, Pauquachin, Tsawout, Tseycum and Malahat Nations) who have stewarded these lands and waters since time immemorial.
